An outbreak of A(H1N1)flu(流感) is no laughing matter. But people are starting to see the lighter side of it now, especially when it comes to masks(口罩).

In Mexico City, one man was wearing a mask with a painted moustache.A woman at an airline counter was seen wearing a mask with a painted butterfly on.

Things were similar back in 2003 when SARS hit China.People wore masks painted with animals, flowers and even Hello Kitty.

History likes to repeat itself.Today, many people around the world have been seen wearing cool facemasks of one type or another. But what matters most is whether they can really protect you from the virus.

Most people were wearing loosefitting(宽松的) face masks, which can help stop fluids spreading from the person wearing the mask. The masks are not, however, created to protect the wearer from breathing in very small particles (微粒) or germs (细菌).Respirators(呼吸器) are designed for this.

These respirators, known for their filtering (过滤) ability, are tighter fitting than ordinary facemasks.Air can be breathed through the filter, but it is easier to breathe through a facemask over a long period of time.

American health officials said that they have no idea how helpful all the masks are in preventing the flu. However, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention has said that masks, especially respirators, might reduce the risk of getting flu if used properly.

Any mask should be used along with other everyday practices. These include frequent handwashing, covering of the mouth when coughing and avoiding close contact with infected people.

Malaysia's Sin Chew Daily newspaper advised:A (H1N1) flu is frightening, but people should have the confidence to defeat it.History has proved that human beings have the ability to defeat contagious (传染性的) diseases.

C.breathing out fluids to infect others

D.the breathing in and out of infected fluids
