In the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers practice a unique form of logging. If a tree is too large to be cut with an ax, the natives cut it down by yelling at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top of their lungs. They continue this for thirty days. The tree dies and falls over.
The theory is that the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works. Ah, those poor na?觙ve (天真的) innocents! Such strangely charming habits of the jungle! Screaming at the tree indeed is primitive. Too bad they don’t have the advantages of modern technology and the scientific mind.
Me? I yell at my wife. And yell at the telephone and the lawn mower (割草机). And yell at the TV and the newspaper and my children. I’ve even been known to shake my fist and yell at the sky at times. The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a stepladder for most of an afternoon. We modern, urban, educated folks yell at the traffic and judges and bills and banks and machines — especially machines.
Don’t know what good it does. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking doesn’t always help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the masterpieces.
A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chattered nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and decided she was doing all the talking. I admired his patience for putting up with her constant words. Distracted (心烦意乱的) by their noise, I moved on.
I encountered them several times as I moved through the various rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant talking, I moved away quickly.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a purchase when the couple approached the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended it into a long cane (手杖) and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man,” the clerk at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery, he made a promise his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked, “He can’t see.”
“Can’t see! You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do,” the clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life.
And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away arm in arm.

A 77-year-old former traffic policeman who for ten years had cared for his Alzheimer’s-stricken wife, walked into the hospital where she was being treated and shot her three times.
Vitangelo Bini then sat down at the foot of her bed to call police. When they arrived he told them: “I couldn’t stand to see her suffer any more.”
Mr. Bini, from Prato, in Tuscany, was in custody (拘留) after being charged with the homicide (杀人罪). His wife, Mara Tani, 82, had suffered from Alzheimer for about ten years and was admitted to the Misericordia e Dolce hospital in Prato last week when she lost consciousness.
Mr. Bini, who had been her full-time carer, had visited her several times a day, hospital staff told the police. On Saturday, however, witnesses said that he entered the room that she shared with five other women, hugged her and then put a towel over her face before shooting her in the head. A few seconds later he fired another shot to the head and one to the heart, Fabio Di Chierri, the vice-director of Prato police station, said.
Mr. Di Chierri said that Mr. Bini sat down and tried to call police on his mobile phone. He could not get through, perhaps because so many others in the neighborhood were doing the same.
Police officers happened to be on the same floor and arrived immediately. Orhan Pamuk, Turkey’s best-known novelist won the 2006 Nobel prize for Literature on Thursday.

Recently a debate about mercy killing caused by a 28-year-old girl, Li Yan, has come into public spotlight.
