Hana: Well first you should definitely go to a temple or a shrine. It describes Japan. And there are many famous temples all over Japan. So you should definitely visit one.

Daniel: Okay, that sounds really interesting. Anything else that I should try? How about for example, Japanese food?

Hana: Well Japanese food is very famous, for example, fish like sushi or sashimi, Japanese people love it, and so does foreign people.

Daniel: Yeah, especially because sushi is getting really, really popular everywhere now. So I'm really looking forward to trying proper Japanese sushi. How about anything else, any like cultural experience or something that Japanese people do every day?

Hana: Well you should try and go to an onsen, it's a hot spring, it's a big bath where you can all go. It'll be different and it would be kind of weird at first. But I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Daniel: Why do you say it's going to be weird?

Hana: Well a lot of people at first, they're embarrassed to be naked in front of people. But once you get used to it, you'll enjoy it and you would want to go every day.

Daniel: Yeah. I'm not sure if I'm okay with being naked in front of people. But if you say that I have to try it I probably will. Do you have any big celebrations or any like big events that I can see in Japan?

Hana: Well, in Japan there are many festivals all around the year. For example, in the summertime there is a huge festival where there is parades and you get to see the fireworks and you can see people in their traditional yukata. And you can try lots of food too.

Peter: So Sarah, what's so unique about people in the south? You often hear about that.

Sarah: Yes. We're often known for being very laidback and easygoing. And we're alsoknown for a certain accent which usually has a lot to do with the vowels in our speech as wellas talking slower. We seem to be not as fast-paced as society in the north and just morefriendly and laidback.

Peter: Okay. Why do you think that is? I'm just curious about it now that you say it.

Sarah: I really have no idea, it just seems to be the way it is. So it's kind of a slower lifestyle,it's not very urban, there's not so much traffic or things going on, it's more rural, very family-oriented. You spend a lot of time with your family and food is also very important. And thoseare the things that we value the most in life, is probably family and food and time, and so wedon't rush through things.

Peter: Sounds like a really easy lifestyle in many ways.

  Sarah: Yeah.

Peter: Comfortable living there. So you spoke about the lifestyle — some of the lifestyles thatyou can see in the south. What kind of things, what social activities do people get involved in?Why is family life so important?

Sarah: Well, something that's also very important in the south is Christianity. So there's a lotof people who are very involved in their churches. And churches usually have a lot of socialgatherings, so besides going to church on Sunday and Bible study on Wednesday night, there'susually picnics and get-togethers and fundraisers and all sorts of things, so very involved withnot only our family but our communities as well as church communities.

Peter: I've heard the term Bible belt being used before, would South Carolina and NorthCarolina be part of the Bible belt in America?

Sarah: Yes, absolutely. Most southern states are a part of this, and that's how it got itsname.

Peter: Aside from those social family events and activities, what other things do people likedoing? If the weather's really mild, do they get out and do a lot of outdoor activities?

Sarah: Absolutely, people love to fish, people love to hunt, so a lot of outdoor activities likethat, and depending on where you live, if you live in the mountains of course a lot of hiking. Andif you live on the coast then a lot of spending time on the beach, laying in the sun, drinkingbeer, that's what a lot of people do.

Peter: So you mentioned that you travelled a lot across America, do you notice whether peoplein other parts of the country are very different to people from the south?

  Sarah: Oh, definitely.

  Peter: In what ways?

Sarah: People in the north are very time-oriented, they seem to be very scheduled, and veryplanned out because they have very, maybe strict jobs with times and very little free timebecause they work a lot and lots of ... if they live in a big city then lots of traffic and lots of ... Idon't know, I think of schedules and meetings and time when I think of the north.
