范文:A Major Advantage/Disadvantage of Advertising on Television (1999)

Every time we turn on TV, we all encounter various advertising –beautiful girls smiling and dancing with fashionable cell phones; handsome young men jumping and swirling with their shining shoes; pretty babies singing and giggling for super milk. Although different people have different ideas about the advantages and disadvantages of TV ads, I will say the advantages weigh more.

The major advantage of advertising on TV lies in its convenience. Advertising on TV can save our time. For example, we can know directly where we can get the goods we need from advertising. Besides, it can save our money. We can compare the similar products advertised on TV and finally get the best and cheapest one without going out or traveling a long distance to get what out friends suggested we should buy. What’s more, we can obtain much information about certain products faster than other media with its beautiful sounds and vivid pictures.

From the above mentioned reasons, we can see it is very convenient for us to know what products are available, how much we should pay for them and where to get them by watching the advertising on TV.

范文:The Importance of Extracurricular Activities (2000)

Extracurricular activities as part of college life are very important for the all-round development of college students. However, I find there are still some students who neglect the importance of these activities.

Evidently, extracurricular activities are important in many ways. Firstly, such activities can enrich students’ college life. As an effective way of both physical and mental relaxation, extracurricular activities provide students with different opportunities to enjoy themselves and relax themselves. For example, after class students can participate in various ball games or colorful recreational activities. Secondly, such activities can help develop students’ sense of teamwork and cooperation with each other. For instance, when involved in group activities, students will realize the limitation of their individual effort and the strength of group work. Lastly, such activities provide the students with an opportunity to be sociable, which is surely helpful for them to communicate with different people in the future after they graduate from college.

In brief, extracurricular activities are of great importance to college students. Only when college students are fully aware of the importance, can they rally enjoy their college life and have an all-round development of their physical strength and mentality. (191 words)

范文: Travel Broadens Our Mind (2001)

It has become a fashion for us Chinese people to go traveling during the long holidays in recent years. People either travel abroad or go sightseeing within the country. In fact travel has already been turned into a part of our life. The significance of travel is obvious—it can broaden out mind.

It is quite definite that travel can broaden out mind. Last summer, I visited Taishan Mountain, a world known natural scenery, and QuFu, a world famous historical and cultural city. On the top of Taishan Mountain I was deeply moved by the natural beauty, picturesque scenes and especially the inscriptions carved on the rocks by so many historical figures, who so profoundly expressed their love of our country. In QuFu I was thoroughly attracted by our great culture and long history of civilization, especially the school of elite, of whom Confucious was the greatest educator. I felt very proud of cultural lineage. As a student of English from a Normal university, I was determined to introduce our great country with so many natural sceneries and so many places of historical relics to the world.

As an old saying goes: traveling ten thousand miles and treading ten thousand books is the top ideal for people. Travel really opens our mind because it enables us to know about the beautiful scenery, the long history and the great culture of a nation. Remember every time you travel around you will experience something new in mind.

范文:The Best Way to Stay Healthy (2002)

Nowadays people are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of health. And they have different ways to stay healthy. Some people exercise every day; others try to keep a balanced diet. In my opinion, to do physical exercise is the best way.

My suggestion that physical exercise is the best way for people to stay fit is based on the following two reasons. The first reason is that physical exercise can help to reduce one’s unnecessary fat and weight. Medical experts have reported that the redundancy of fat is one of the causes of various diseases, some of which are even fatal. The second reason is that physical exercise can keep people a good shape of figure. For example, by doing physical exercise, man can have a strong body and look cool while woman can have a slim figure and look pretty. That is why there are so many people doing physical exercise in the parks, on the sports ground and in the various body-building clubs.

In short, I believe the best way to keep fit is to do physical exercise. We may bear the following in mind: to do physical exercise every day, you will keep the doctor away. (200 words)

范文:The Importance of Keeping a Good Mood (2003)

Modern people are supposed to endure a lot of pressure, from education, career or family. There are often tragic stories in the newspaper about people who went insane or committed suicide. Those tragedies once again indicate how important it is to keep a good mood.

Keeping a good mood under whatever circumstances is important in at least two aspects. The first one is that keeping a good mood can help people possess a right attitude towards various difficulties and challenges. For example, some people have failed in business for several times and now they are in deep debt, but they never give up their hope and still believe they have the ability to be successful. This self-confidence will surely lead them to success someday. The second one is that keeping a good mood can help people put disappointment and frustration in the right perspective. Thinking that failure is the mother of success, people can well survive the temporary blows and look forward to the right future.

Through the above analysis, we can realize how important it is to keep a good mood in order to face the pressure or challenges of modern society. When most people are aware of the importance of physical health, we must simultaneously remind them of the significance of mental health. (215 words)

范文:Will Phones Kill Letter Writing? (2004)

According to a recent survey made by the China Daily, about 200 million Chinese are using phones as their daily communications means instead of writing letters. So some people say that phones will kill letter writing. But I don’t think so.

My argument that phones will not kill letter writing lies in at least three aspects. First, letter writing as a traditional way of communication still has some advantages over phones. For example, if people want to express something confidential to their close friends, they will turn to letter writing. Another example is that rural workers who are working far away from their hometown are more likely to write letters to their families than to make phone calls for the purpose of saving money. Second, letter writing is more authoritative and formal in some way. For instance, people who are doing business will write formal business letters to do a deal; people who want to recommend or introduce someone to someone else will write letter of recommendation or letter of introduction, etc. Last but not least, letter writing is still regarded as a token of friendship among friends. People always write letters to show their everlasting love and affection.

All in all, letter writing is still very popular among people. It is still a good way for people to communicate with each other and it is impossible to be killed by phones. (232 words)

  范文:MY IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY ARTS FESTIVAL(2005)

I’ve heard the Student’s Union will host an arts festival next semester. According to my experience, the festival should include the indispensable element—arts education. And the Festival organizer has the necessity to work in conjunction with a volunteer artistic and administrative team.

The arts are essential part of education. They give us a unique means of expression, capturing our passions and emotion, and allowing us to explore new ideas, subject matters and cultures. Arts education not only enhances students’ understanding of the world around them, but it also broadens their perspective on traditional academics. The arts give us the creativity to express ourselves, while challenging our intellect. The arts integrate life and learning for all students and are integral in the development of the whole person. So, without arts education, the Arts Festival will not be incomplete. Volunteers, especially those who possess artistic and administrative abilities, should be recruited. Volunteers provide free service so that the total cost of the Festival can be lowered. Besides, they are usually enthusiasts about arts, so their work will be very efficient. Volunteers can be students or professionals, and, volunteers and staff should be treated with the same respect and attention.

Our university has so many amazing groups and talented individuals, but there has been no coordinated effort to showcase them. The Arts Festival will bring together undergraduates, professional school students and the community.

  * Big Company or Small Company

Upon graduation from college, young men and women face the first choice in their career life: to go to a large company or a small one? Although many graduates are attracted by the prestige of large companies, I believe small one will afford more chances of success and more opportunities to develop your ability.

It is true that working for a big, world-known company will provide you with both status and pride, and because of your association with it, your families and friends will think of you more highly, assuming you are more competent with promising future. But this wouldn’t compensate for the fact that many capable persons end up working as a cog in a big machine. In a small company however, you will feel more responsible and excited, you will have more decisions to make, and you can see the effect of your work and of your decisions right away. What’s more, in a large company you tend to be limited to one procedure and taught one thing only. While you are normally exposed to all kinds of experiences and are expected to do many things in a small company. Last but not least, in large company, the constant need to prove that you are as good as or better than your fellow competitors creates constantly anxiety and stress. In a small company, however, you work comfortably and feel at ease, though you salary may be a little bit lower.

Obviously, if you want to be an excellent manager or successful entrepreneur in your future career, working in small companies will provide you more opportunities.

  * Where Old Sick People Go?

It is traditional custom for Chinese old, sick people to live with their children and their grandchildren. But in recent decades, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. More and more old and sick parents were placed in the nursing homes. Although many people frown on it, I don’t think it is a bad tendency.

For the sake of their health, old and sick people are better off being placed in nursing homes. For there they can receive better service and more intensive care of the professional nurses. On the contrary, living in the home they often can’t be taken proper care of as their adult children are often too busy with their own families and their work to give adequate time to them. Most importantly, the old and sick people will be much happier there than at home. As their adult children go to work and grandchildren to school during the day, they have to spend most of the time with themselves. But in nursing homes for elderly they won’t suffer such boredom and loneliness. They can have people of their age to talk and play all day.

It is true that the young have the duty to take care of their parents, especially when they are old and sick. But sending the old and sick to the nursing home is not an act of abandonment, but a sign of love. It is something like sending your baby to the kindergarten. It can reduce adult’s burden and worries about their old and sick parents.

  * Movie Goers or TV Viewers

With more and more families owing the most modern TV sets, the number of film goers has declined sharply. While the number of TV movie viewers continue climbing, reaching the highest in history. Although the majority choose to watch TV programs, I like going to movies.

Admittedly, watching movies on TV is a comfortable and enjoyable thing. You don’t have to travel to the cinema, risking traffic jams or terrible weather. But to most TV viewers, a movie can’t be enjoyed thoroughly. For one thing, advertisements are frequently inserted in the program, especially at a crucial plot, making the viewers very disappointed. For another, you have very few choices. What shows on TV is often old and out-of-date. Seeing films, however, you can avoid all these drawbacks. Although films are expensive and going to the cinema is not convenient enough, the movie goers can enjoy the film as a real treat. You don’t have to worry about the insertion of ads on the film. You can select the most suitable time and your favorite film. Most importantly, the modern cinema offers the best sound effect and most wonderful atmosphere, which TV can’t produce.

A few days ago I invited one of my friends to see a film, a friend who haven’t gone to the cinema for nearly 10 years. After reaching home from the cinema, he telephoned me: “I have never expected the modern cinema has such wonderful effect on me. I’m intoxicated.”

  * Which Mode of Travel Do You Like?

With the increased standard of living and the declining working weeks, more and more people are able to make a holiday trip to places of interest. While many like to join package tours for convenience, I prefer to travel individually.

I like traveling on my own not only because it costs much less but because it gives a great degree of independence and freedom. Traveling on my own, I can decide when to start on my way, where to linger a little longer and which spot can be skipped over to save energy or time for another spot. I’m always my own boss. On the contrary, in a package tour you’re deprived of as much freedom as in a military base. At the sound of the whistle, you have to jump up from a sound sleep, and with heavy-lidded eyes, hurry to the gathering place where you are collected and counted to board a coach. At the sight of the little flag waving, you must immediately pull yourself away from the scenes you are marveling at and follow the guide whose sole interest is to cover all spots according to his strict schedule, regardless of the weather or your health condition.

True, you may encounter inconvenience if you travel individually, for instance, getting accommodations for the night and finding a place for meals. But nothing can be compared with the freedom, which is vital to a person who takes a holiday trip mainly to escape from the constraints of his routine life.

  * How to solve Traffic Problems?

With the development of industry, heavy traffic has become the source of greatest complaint in many big cities. Two solutions have been recommended so far, and each one has both advantages and disadvantages.

One of the solutions is to lay down more roads. The advantage of the first solution is obvious: it can reduce traffic density and hence speed up the flow of buses and cars. But the traffic flows constantly rise to fill whatever scale of roads and highways that are provided for them. Furthermore, in a city with booming industry, land is precious resource and cannot be extravagantly used for traffic. Another solution is to open up more bus routes. People who suggested this said if more bus routes were opened up, the number of bicycles and cars in streets would be decreased; therefore, it is a good means of solving the problem of heavy traffic. But this may give rise to another new set of problems, for example, people may not feel as convenient as they did before.

Since neither of the suggestions can effectively solve the problem of heavy traffic, there is an increased awareness that two solutions may be combined with other possible solutions to produce the best effect.

  * Is Stress A Bad Thing?

“I can’t stand the pressure and competition, ” explained one friend of mine when asked why he decided to quit his high-paid but demanding position in his company recently. My friend may have his own reasons, but I don’t think his decision is wise in reality.

Quite a number of men and women have chosen to do something less competitive at the cost of a comfortable life a highly-paid job can obtain. They are afraid that the stresses of work will rob them of happiness, and do them harm physically and mentally. However, stress isn’t the bad thing it is often supposed to be. Unless it gets out of control, a certain amount of stress would be fairly good to us. People under stress tend to express their full range of potential and to actualize their own personal worth --- the very aim of a human life. Stress is also vital to provide motivation and challenge, and to give purpose and significance to an otherwise meaningless idle life. In fact, the choices we make between “flight” and “fight” make the difference between leaders and mediocrities.

Since stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it, what we can do is to develop our adaptive abilities to deal with it rather than to escape from it.

  * Studying Abroad

With the improved living standard and China more open to the world, more and more young people choose to pursue their higher education in foreign countries, such as America, Britain or Australia. Generally speaking, the advantages of studying overseas outweigh its disadvantages.

The main benefit of studying abroad is academic one. Obviously in western colleges and universities, the laboratories are more sophisticated, and book resources more up-to-date. More importantly, they have first-rate professors who are aware of all the latest developments in their respective fields. Hence the standard of teaching is much higher. Besides academic benefits, there are other advantages. For example, exposure to foreign culture and contact with students from different countries and different backgrounds will broaden their mind and make them more tolerant. Living alone in the foreign land will also offer greater opportunity to develop their independence, their personalities and many other interpersonal skills.

Despite these obvious advantages, we should not overlook negative effects. For example, the overseas students may experience loneliness and homesickness, an experience so overwhelming that many could not endure it. Though overseas study has its drawbacks, the advantages are obvious. Provided that it is financially feasible, an oversea education may do a person more good than harm.

  * Should Euthanasia Be Legalized?

Euthanasia, a quiet and easy death, or “mercy killing” as we call it, recently has made the headlines frequently. Yet opinions about whether euthanasia should be legalized vary from person to person.

As is pointed out, to practice euthanasia can benefit both the patient and his family. To a terminally ill person who is suffering unbearable pains day and night or “living like a vegetable”, to be allowed to end his life painlessly is a good release. To his family, given the expense of sustaining his life, it is also a big relief, both financial and mental. However, the legalization of euthanasia may also bring with it problems our society has not previously faced. Is it likely that the patient does not want to die, but just to unload the guilt of remaining alive? Is it possible that euthanasia could be taken advantage of for certain criminal purposes? Still, there is also the matter of mistaken diagnoses, which, though rather rare, do occur.

Since the legalization of euthanasia will raise serious moral and social issues, the decision our society makes about it will undoubtedly have tremendous consequences in society.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Air Travel

In the last fifty years, traveling by air has become the most popular form of long-distance journeys. However, there are both positive and negative points associated with it.

The first advantage of air travel is that it is quick. For instance, we can fly from Beijing to Guangzhou in less than three hours. The second advantage of traveling by air is that it is convenient. After we have checked in, all we have to do is get on and sit down. The friendly air stewardess will look after our every need. The third advantage of traveling by air is that it is now relatively cheap, especially for long distance travel. We can fly from Beijing to Guangzhou for only 1,200 yuan. But on the other hand, traveling by air has its disadvantages. Perhaps the most obvious is the element of danger involved, such as hijackings and crashes. Traveling by air also makes it impossible for us to see many scenic spots on the way to our destination. In addition to the above mentioned, a long distance air travel may make us very tired, both mentally and physically. Many precious days of holiday may be wasted recovering from air-sickness.

To conclude, although air travel involved inconvenience and slight risk, I would say that the advantages mentioned above weigh much more than the disadvantages.

The Best Way to Reduce Stress

While modern life offers us many conveniences, it also requires us to deal with pressure and frustration in daily life. It is important for all of us to find a way to relieve the stress in order to live happy and healthy lives. Some people prefer to engage in physical exercise, and some feel more relaxed after watching TV or even sleeping. As for me, I find that the best way to reduce stress is to spend time with family and friends.

One reason I prefer to spend time with others is that their company is a pleasant distraction. When under stress, if I spend time alone, I may continue to dwell on my problems. However, sharing good times with family or friends helps me to forget my worries. Another reason is that I have an opportunity to discuss my problems. Their advice is often helpful because they can see my situation more objectively than I can. Furthermore, simply talking about my problems often makes me feel better. Finally, spending time with others reminds me of what is important in life and helps me to keep things in perspective.

For all of these reasons, I believe that the best way to reduce stress is to spend time with others. But no matter what method we choose, it is important to find an appropriate way to relieve pressure. Only in this way can we lead well-balanced lives.

  My Views on Examinations

In most schools and college, the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject. Although it does the job quite efficiently, its side effects are also enormous.

The most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. As the examination score is the only criterion for his academic performance, a student is driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively. Examinations do not motivate a student to obtain more knowledge, but to restrict his reading; they do not enable him to study consistently throughout the semester, but to induce cramming during exam week. Examinations also lower the standards of teaching. Since teachers themselves are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. And no subjects can be taught successfully merely for the purpose of passing examinations.

Personally, I don’t think that examinations can contribute anything really important to the students’ academic development. My suggestion is that educational authorities should devise more efficient and reliable measures to evaluate students’ ability of analyzing and solving problems. (185 words)

  My Idea of Internet

Internet is now very popular in our country. Surfing on the net has become a daily topic among many people. But every coin has two sides. We have to identify its impacts on us, good and bad.

Internet plays an important role in our life. It makes the world smaller and people closer to each other. Internet is also the most convenient and efficient access to information. Moreover, for modern people who suffer much pressure of work and life, the net has also become their private repose. However useful Internet is to us, it has its own problems. First, some people are so enthusiastic about the net that they lose themselves in the world invented by the net. Second, the net sometimes offers information of larger quantity and wider range than it is expected. Therefore, it takes more and more time to seek the real useful information. Last and the most important, Internet has become a new lieu of crimes. For example, officials find their secret documents become open mails on the web because it is difficult to prevent their computer from being invaded by the criminals.

In fact, nothing is flawless in the world. Since Internet has contributed and will contribute greatly to our life, we should make full use of it while minimizing its negative effects. With a stricter administration of the net and the improvement of vague morality, Internet will better the world for all of us. ( 240 words)

My View on the Development of a Private Car

With the increase in the general standard of living, some Chinese families can now afford a car. Yet opinions of the development of a private car vary from person to person. In my opinion, private cars should be developed in China.

There are many advantages in possessing a car. It gives a much greater degree of comfort and mobility. The owner of a car is no longer forced to rely on public transport, and hence no irritation caused by waiting for buses or taxies. With a car he can go where he likes and when he wants, he can enjoy his leisure time by making trips to the country or seaside on the weekends. What’s more, the growth of automobile industry can lead to the boom of other important industries such as iron and steel production, energy and technological application. However, others strongly object to developing private cars. They maintain that as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the environment and causing actual harm to the health of people. Besides, private cars contribute to traffic jams so greatly that the advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled by the frustration caused by heavy traffic.

In short, private cars should be developed in China with the development of our society. And the comfort and independence that a private car can bring to people shall never be neglected. (244 words)

范文:The Advantages and Disadvantages of College Students’ Taking a Part-time Job (1995)

Nowadays it has become fashionable for college students to take a part-time job in their spare time. I think this trend has advantages as well as disadvantages.

The advantages of college students’ taking a part-time job are as follows. By taking a part-time job, college students can earn some money for their daily necessities, so they can ease their families’ financial burden and become economically independent. Besides, by taking a part-time job, college students can get some working experiences and know how to use their knowledge in practical work, how to cooperate with others and how to deal with some problems they may face. These experiences are surely helpful to their future work after graduation. However, the disadvantages of college students’ taking a part-time job can not be neglected. The main disadvantage is that if they spend too much time on their part-time jobs, their academic studies will be affected. They may not have enough time to digest what they have learned in class.

Since taking a part-time job has both advantages and disadvantages, college students should be careful when they decide whether they should take a part-time job or not. (191 words)

 范文:The Main Difference Between My College Life and My Middle School Life (1996)

If people ask me such a question—what do you think is the main difference between your college life and middle school life? My answer is always the same: the main difference is that in college I enjoy a great degree of “independence”.

I prefer college life to middle school mainly because I am independent both in daily life and in my academic studies. In college I will arrange my daily life by myself and make decisions of my own will. As for academic study, I have a plenty of free time after class for self-study and learn whatever I am interested in. to be successful in all the courses I have to learn, I even can have a workable plan of my own. While in middle school, I lived a dependent life. My daily life was arranged all by my parents. I even could not decide what to eat and what to wear, for my parents usually had the final say. And I was jammed with what the teachers wanted to feed me, without considering whether I really liked to learn or not. By comparison, I should say I love the independent life in college. In college I feel I am a grown-up.

In short, my college life is quite different from my middle school life. In college, I am much more independent in my daily life and study. To those new comers I would suggest that they rely on themselves and be an independent man.

范文:More Pressure from Academic Studies Does Good to Us (1997)

There has been a heated debate about the effect of pressure from academic studies on us students in our college. Some of my fellow students argue that it is not good for us to study under great pressure. Personally I do not agree upon this view.

My argument that more pressure does good to us is based on the following two reasons. First, no pressure means no progress. With the development of our society, competition among people grows more and more fierce, college students are no exception. They must learn how to deal with future challenges foreseeable even today. Under pressure, each student has to work hard to lay a solid foundation of his or her specialties. Companies are likely to employ those who have done well in their special field of study. Therefore, in college the top ones will make great efforts to take the lead, whereas the low achievers will do their utmost to catch up. Second, no pressure means no self-discipline.The teachers do give assignments from time to time, yet they have not imposed enough pressure on the students. As a result, quite a few of us idle away their time by playing video games, playing with Internet, or playing cards. All these do not merely happen on weekends. With more academic pressure upon the students, they will not cherish their time and have self-restrictions with their study and even self-behavior.

In summary, I believe more pressure from academic studies does a great deal of good to us college students. If we treat pressure with a correct attitude, we will surely make more progress in our study.

  便条范文:道歉

  May 17,1997

  Dear Victoria,

I am writing to apologize for having not invited you to the party held at my home last Saturday. It all happened by accident. Before the party, I wrote down the names of the guests I would invite on a sheet of paper and asked my younger sister to inform them one by one. But my sister got all the things mixed up. When I found you did not turn up at the party then I realized my carelessness. How sorry I felt for that at that moment. I wish you would forgive me.

  Yours,

  Peter

范文: One Way to Solve the Problem (1998)

It is now generally accepted that vehicles are a major source of air pollution in cities. Some solutions have been proposed, such as reducing the number of private vehicles, fully promoting public transportation means and suing lead-free petrol, and so on. However, my advice is that we may use electricity-generated vehicles instead as a solution to the problem.

The substitution of petrol with electricity is advantageous for at least two reasons. The first reason is that electricity is clean. We know that the use of petrol has proved to be the most serious cause of pollution. The second reason is that electricity is almost inexhaustible. Since many ways of generating electricity are available now, the resort to electricity may free us from the worry that the power needed for vehicle use may run out someday. As a result, we will not have to impose restrictions on the use of vehicles. Nor will we need to trim down the number.

To sum up, suing electricity as power is an ideal solution to the problem of vehicle pollution. It can both keep the air clean and permanently satisfy the needs of vehicle users. (204 words)
