The Remembrance of Lilacs
淡紫色的回忆
The family had just moved to Rhode Island, and the young woman was feeling a little melancholy on that Sunday in May. After all, it was Mother's Day -- and 800 miles separated her from her parents in Ohio.

She had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy Mother's Day, and her mother had mentioned the colorful yard filled with purple lilacs.

Before they got halfway up the hill, the fragrance of the lilacs drifted down to them, and the kids started running. Soon, the mother began running, too, until she reached the top. There were the towering lilacs bushes, so laden with the huge flower clusters.

When they were within three miles of home, she suddenly shouted to her husband, "Stop the car. Stop right here!" the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope with the lilacs still in her arms. At the top of the hill was a nursing home and the patients were outdoors strolling with relatives or sitting on the porch.

She lifted her head, and smiled. For a few moments, the two women chatted, both aglow with happiness, and then the young woman turned and ran back to her family.

The next day the husband purchased half a dozen young lilac bushes and planted them around their yard.

In 1989 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
1989年，一次8.2级的地震几乎铲平美国，在短短不到4分钟的时间里，夺去了3万多人的生命!在彻底的破坏与混乱之中，有位父亲将他的妻子在家里安顿好后，跑到他儿子就读的学校，而触目所见，却是被夷为平地的校园。
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: "No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
看到这令人伤心的一幕，他想起了曾经对儿子所作的承诺："不论发生什么事，我都会在你身边。"至此，父亲热泪满眶。目睹曾经的学校成为了一堆瓦砾，真叫人绝望。但父亲的脑中仍然牢记着他对儿子的诺言。
He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building; he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.

As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: "My son!" "My daughter!" Other well meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: "It s too late! They’re all dead! You can’t help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there s nothing you can do!"

To which this loving, caring American father asked, "Are you going to help me now?"

The police came and said, "You’re angry, anxious and it s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!" To which he replied, "Are you going to help me now?" No one helped.

Courageously he went on alone because he needed to know for himself: "Is my boy alive or is he dead?" He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son s voice. He screamed his son s name, "ARMAND!" He heard back, "Dad!?! It s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you d save me and when you saved me, they d be saved. You promised, No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you! You did it, Dad!" "What s going on in there? How is it?" the father asked.

The Exact Price of a Miracle for Little Brother
奇迹的代价
Tess was a precocious eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money to pay for very costly surgery.
听爸爸妈妈谈起小弟安德鲁的事情时，苔丝已是一个早熟的8岁小女孩。她只知道弟弟病得很厉害，父母却无钱付非常昂贵的手术费用给他医治。
She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar .She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even.
她听到爸爸对满含泪水的妈妈低声而绝望地说：“现在只有奇迹可以救他了。”苔丝回到房间，拿出一个玻璃瓶子，把里面所有的零钱倒在地上并仔细数了3次。
Carefully placing the coins back in the jar, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to the pharmacy.

She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice, “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages. ” He continued.
她耐心地等待着药剂师，可是药剂师非常忙，并没有注意她。最后，她从瓶子里拿出个2角5分的硬币摔在玻璃柜台上，弄出清脆的响声。“你需要点什么?”药剂师不耐烦地问，“我要去接我的弟弟，他从芝加哥来，我们很多年没见了。”他继续。
"Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” "I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Andrew and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now.
“我想跟你说下我弟弟的事情。”苔丝回答，“他真的病得很严重……我想为他买个奇迹。”“你说什么?”药剂师问到，“他叫安德鲁，爸爸说现在只有奇迹能救他。
"We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. Just tell me how much it costs.” The pharmacist’s brother stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” "I don’t know.” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
“我们这里不卖奇迹，小女孩，很抱歉不能帮助你，”药剂师稍带温和地说。“听着，我有很多钱，请告诉我奇迹多少钱?”这时候，药剂师的弟弟问小女孩“你弟弟需要什么样的奇迹呢?”“我不知道。”苔丝的眼泪涌了上来。
"I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. "How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered. "Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents — the exact price of a miracle for little brothers. " He grasped her hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents.”

That man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a famous surgeon.

The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home again. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events. “That surgery,” her Mom whispered, “was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?” Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.
手术没有支付任何费用，安德鲁回家后不久就康复了。爸爸和妈妈高兴地谈论着这件事情。“这个手术真的是个奇迹，奇迹到底需要多少钱呢?”母亲低声自语。苔丝笑了，她知道奇迹的真正价值：一美元十一美分，加上一个小女孩的信念。
