Romantic Summer

  Summer afternoon--summer afternoon;to me those have always been the two most beautiful words.

  Summer is the glorious time of the year when most of us can put on our shorts and short-sleeved shirts and actually feel the air and sunlight on our skin; when we don't have to turn up the heat in the morning when we get up; but also when we lay hot and sweaty in bed, unable to sleep at times (those of us who don't have air conditioning, anyway); when we get the sunburn and the heatstroke and all those wonderful things.

  All green and fair the summer lies, just budded from the bud of spring, with tender blue of wistful skies, and winds that softly sing. How beautiful the summer night is, which is not night, but a sunless, yet unclouded day, descending upon earth with dews and shadows and refreshing coolness! How beautiful the long mild twilight, which, like a silver clasp, unites today with yesterday!

  Summer is a sailor in a rowboat and ice-cream on your dress when you're four years old. Summer is a man with his coat off, wet sand between your toes, the smell of a garden an hour before moonrise. Summer is silk itself, a giant geranium and music from a flute far away!

  No matter how we see it,summer has a magic that we can't deny--all four seasons do. Here to those who have addressed that magic: enjoy your summer!

  Summer Sunrises on the Mississippi

  One can never see too many summer sunrises on the Mississippi.

  They are enchanting.

  First, there is the eloquence of silence;for a deep hush broods everywhere.

  Next, there is the haunting sense of loneliness, isolation,remoteness from the worry and bustle of the world.

  The dawn creeps in stealthily;

  跟着黎明悄然而至;

  the solid walls of the black forest soften to grey,and vast stretches of the river open up and reveal themselves;

  那一片黑压压的森林,如城垣一般坚不可摧,也缓缓地被日光融化成灰色,广阔的水域也渐渐清晰,映入眼帘;

  the water is smooth,gives off spectral little wreaths of white-mist,there is not the faintest breath of wind, nor stir of leaf;

  河水如玻璃一般明净,在光谱的映照下泛出一圈一圈的白晕,河面上风平浪静,落叶仿佛也受到感染,纹丝不动;

  the tranquility is profound and infinitely satisfying.

  Then a bird pipes up, another follows,and soon the pipings develop into a jubilant riot of music.

  You see none of the birds,you simply move through an atmosphere of song which seems to sing itself.

  When the light has become a little stronger,you have one of the fairest and softest pictures imaginable.

  You have the intense green of the massed and crowded foliage near by;you see it paling shade by shade in front of you;

  河的附近,树木枝繁叶茂,郁郁葱葱;放眼望去,一排厚似一排,直至暗无踪影;

  upon the next projecting cape,a mile off or more,the tint has lightened to the tender young green of spring;

  沿着河岸走一英里左右,来到下一个河岬,这周围的色调比之前稍淡,宛似春天的翠绿色;

  the cape beyond that one has almost lost colour,and the furthest one, miles away under the horizon,sleeps upon the water a mere dim vapour,and hardly separable from the sky above it and about it.

  And all this stretch of river is a mirror,and you have shadowy reflections of the leafage and the curving shores and the receding capes pictured in it.

  Well, this is all beautiful; soft and rich and beautiful;

  一切都是那么美;或淡雅、或浓郁,无一不美;

  and when the sun gets well up,and distributes a pink flush here and a powder of gold yonder and a purple haze where it will yield the best effect,you grant that you have something that is worth remembering.

  Whether I like it or not, I consider myself an honorary memberof East Asian society.

  For the past 2 years, I’ve had the privilege of travelling to various countries in Asia, specificallyIndonesia and China. These trips weren’t the typical vacations that last for roughly two weeks andconsist of hopping from one tourist destination to the next. Rather, I completely immersed myselfin the culture, staying in both Indonesia and China for approximately 6 weeks. I befriended theman who made my breakfast everyday in Beijing, and I keep in touch with the girl I worked with atWiCell Technologies in Jakarta.

  After two consecutive years of escaping to the Eastern Hemisphere, however, I’m staying athome. In colloquial terms, it sucks.

  Everyday, I yearn for the thrill of travelling, the thrill of trying a new Asian dish, the thrill ofbargaining with a hostile vendor on the street for a bracelet that caught my eye. I catch myselfwatching hours Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, and replaying the episodes where he visits asmall town in China or secluded village deep in Vietnam. Occasionally, I scroll through the picturesfrom my travels, lingering on the ones where my memories stem from.

  My desire to travel, in fact, makes me incredibly impulsive. One day, I was watching my old friendAndrew Zimmern travel to Cambodia. I watched him taste the peculiar foods and float down amassive man-made lake, clustered with locals trying to find dinner. The second the show ended, Iran upstairs to my computer and looked up plane tickets to Phnom Penh. It’s pathetic, I know.

  I apologize for this sob story that’s dominated a good portion of my article. Let me try to spinthings around.

  Though I’m devastated about not being able to travel for the summer, staying in place does haveits up’s. I graduated from high school just recently. As I walked across the stage, reaching out formy high school principal’s hand with my right and taking my diploma with my left, I graduated. AsI walked across the stage, almost in a trance, I realized I had just wrapped up one of the mostimportant stages in my life. I was soon entering the real world, but I had one last summer that see-sawed in between the real world and the world my peers and I had just left. I had one last summerto make memories with high school friends that I would reminisce about during old age.

  Additionally, I am pleased to say I have found a job this summer. I work at the Seneca Hill AnimalHospital and Resort where I look after dogs whose owners have left for summer vacation. Thework may be hard, but at least I’m compensated.

  All in all, life at home so far has not been all that difficult. I’m spending time with old friends, andearning for myself, two things that could not be done outside the US. Although I would havewanted to spend the summer in a magical land with foreign foods, languages, and people, I haveto realize that life is what you make of it. That’s why I’m going to make my time at home the bestvacation I’ve ever had.
