he United States You May Not Know

The United States is the only superpower in the world, and it is far more advanced than anyother country.

However, we can't simply attribute its powerfulness and prosperity to its lucky escape fromthe destruction of the two world wars.

What other nations should reflect on is the American spirit and its social system.

The most obvious features of the American Spirit are creativity and pragmatism.

Nearly 70% of the important inventions have been made in the U.S. since the first industrialrevolution.

Since the U.S. occupies such an important position in science and technology, naturally it hasbecome the first superpower in the world.

Americans are always discontent with what they have achieved, and they have an appetite foradventure over the love of ease.

European countries have been pursuing a reformist policy of "high tax and high welfare" sincethe 1960s, while only the U.S. sticks to the policy of "high risk and high return".

As a result, the U.S. has become the bellwether of the third industrial revolution (in technologyof information, materials and biology).

High salary is not the only attraction that the talents from other countries find in the UnitedStates.

Some characteristics of American society should not be ignored.

Family backgrounds and great wisdom in building connections and playing up the boss, to whichgreat importance is attached in other countries, are not so important to individual developmentin the U.S.

Most people are on the same starting line, and whether one can succeed or not depends on hisown ability and hard work.

However, the American character is full of paradoxes.

The American people are both extremely romantic and pragmatic.

The American is a pleasure-seeking people, but in every field there are workaholics.

The Americans are open-minded but they are very conservative on certain matters.

Since China's reform and opening-up to the outside world, many media in Western countrieshave greatly changed their attitudes towards China.

However, the American media are singing the same old tune against China as they were in theCold War period.

The Americans value freedom, but their government is very fond of interfering in othercountries' internal affairs.

What's most puzzling is that the Americans defy authority, but they highly respect the lawsand regulations of the society.

Therefore, in such a nation that values personal liberty, the society can still be kept in goodorder and operate with high efficiency.

Is it odd? No one can provide a satisfactory answer.

North side of the Mall, 14th St NW and Constitution Ave; closest Metro Smithsonian.

If you like kitsch, you won't want to miss the bizarre melange of cultural artefacts at theNational Museum of American History. George Washington's wooden teeth, Muhammad Ali'sboxing gloves, and the ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in the Wizard of Oz are set amongdidactic displays tracing the country's development. It's not so much a center for scholarlystudy as a sanctuary for vanishing Americana, incorporating Model T Fords, old post officesand even a restored, turn-of-the-century ice-cream parlor, which still serves up banana splits.

As you enter from the Mall, directly on to the second floor, a sound-and-light displayshowcases the battered red, white and blue flag that inspired the US national anthem - theStar-Spangled Banner itself, which survived the British bombing of Baltimore harbor during theWar of 1812. The worthier exhibits are also on this floor: an account of the rural farm-basedsociety of the early US stands across from an examination of the mass movement of African-Americans from Southern farms to the wartime industries of northern cities. A lunch counterfrom Woolworths in Greensboro, North Carolina, evokes the sit-in of 1960, while "AmericanEncounters" focuses on New Mexico, looking at how tourism has affected communities such asthe pueblo of Santa Clara and Hispanic Chimayo. On the first floor, the "Information Age"gallery traces communications from Morse's first telegraph to Apple Macintoshes, whileseparate galleries display in glorious profusion the artefacts and machines that have shapedmodern America - from lightbulbs and motorbikes to trains and atomic clocks. The top floorholds political memorabilia (much of it over a century old), stamp and coin collections, old TVsets and typewriters, though two final outstanding exhibits inject a serious tone - "PersonalLegacy: the Healing of a Nation" brings together some of the 25,000 items left by relatives atthe Vietnam Memorial in DC, while "A More Perfect Union" deals candidly with the shamefulinternment of Japanese-American citizens during World War II.

  American Vacations

It's summertime, and the life is easy. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is out. Because the weather is great. And most of all, because we all deserve a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot.

Many American vacations are as unique as the people who take them. Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind. More and more "family friendly" vacation resorts offer special programs for children.

History buffs seek out famous historical sites and museums. Environmentalists prefer "green vacations." These trips allow them to observe flora and fauna up-close without disturbing the sensitive balance of nature.

Some people find sea cruises relaxing and refreshing. Others hit the water to go fishing, skiing or white-water rafting. Daring souls get the thrill of a lifetime on trekking expeditions and safaris in remote places from Afica to Asia.

Americans aren't the only people in the world who travel. International business, mass communication and jet airplanes have created a world of globetrotters.

People all over the world enjoy going abroad to travel. And no matter where they live, people enjoy visiting scenic spots in their own country. But being on the go makes Americans what they are: people on the move. In America, almost everybody is a tourist sometime.
