  从前有个小女孩,从小父母双亡,她穷得没有地方住,也没有床儿睡,除了身上穿的衣服和手里拿的一块麵包外,甚么也没有了,就是那麵包也是个好心人送的。

  Once upon a time there was a little girl whose father and mother had died, and she was so poor that she no longer had a room to live in, nor a bed to sleep in, and at last she had nothing else but the clothes she was wearing and a little piece of bread in her hand that some charitable soul had given her.

  她心地善良,待人诚恳,但她无依无靠,四处流浪。

  She was good and pious, however. And as she was thus forsaken by all the world, she went forth into the country, trusting in dear God.

  一次她在野外遇了一位穷人,那人说:“行行好,给我点吃的,我饿极了。”小姑娘把手中的麵包全部给了他。

  Then a poor man met her, who said, "Ah, give me something to eat, I am so hungry." She handed him her entire piece of bread, saying, "May God bless it for you," and went on her way.

  往前走了没多久,她又遇到了一个小男孩,哭着哀求道:“我好冷,给我点东西遮一遮好吗?”小女孩听了,取下了自己的帽子递给他。然后她又走了一会儿,她看见一个孩子没穿罩衫,在风中冷得直发抖。她脱下了自己的罩衫给了他。再走一会儿又有一个在乞求一件褂子,她把自己的给了她。最后,她来到了一片森林,这时天色渐渐暗起来了。走着走着又来了一个孩子,请求她施舍一件汗衫,这个善良的小女孩心想:“天黑了,没有人看我,我完全可以不要汗衫。”想着就脱下了自己的汗衫给了这孩子。

  Then came a child who moaned and said, "My head is so cold. Give me something to cover it with." So she took off her cap duanwenw.com and gave it to the child. And when she had walked a little farther, she met another child who had no jacket and was freezing. So she gave her jacket to that child, and a little farther on one begged for a dress, and she gave her dress away as well. At length she made her way into a forest and it was already dark. You can very well give your shift away," and she took it off, and gave it away as well.

  And thus she stood there, with nothing left at all, when suddenly some stars fell down from heaven, and they were nothing else but hard shining talers, and although she had just given her shift away, she was now wearing a new one which was of the very finest linen. Then she gathered together the money into it, and was rich all the days of her life.

  一叶障目Covering the Eye with a Leaf

  In the State of Chu, there was a man whose family was very poor. Even at night the often dreamt of striking it rich, but the never worked hard.

  楚国有个人,家里非常贫苦。他晚上做梦也想发笔横财,但是他从来不好好劳动。

  One day, when he was leafing through the book Huainan Zi, he came across a line saying:” When the mantis preys on the cicada, it relies entirely upon a leaf to conceal its body.” He thought that if one could get such a leaf, one could become invisible.

  一天,他翻阅《淮南子》,读到书中这样一句话:螳螂捕蝉,全靠有一片能遮身的树叶。他想,人要是能得到这片树叶,就能隐身了。

  Thereupon, he ran into the woods, looking for just such a leaf among the branches. He duanwenw.com had searched a long time before he discovered a mantis hiding itself behind a leaf and waiting to catch a cicada. He climbed up the tree at once, and plucked the leaf. But he was in such a big hurry that, out of carelessness. The leaf dropped to the ground. There were many, many fallen leaves on the ground. How could he identify the leaf he had plucked? So he had to put all the leaves into a bamboo basket and carry them home.

  In the beginning, his wife always answered:” Yes, I can.”

  After a long time, she began to feel weird: what was the matter with her husband today? Why did he keep holding up a leaf and asking her the same question?

  He did this over and over again for one whole day. In the end, his wife duanwenw.com got impatient and humoured him by saying:” No, I can’t.”

  Hearing this, he became wild with joy. He turned and ran out to the street. Holding the leaf in one hand, he grabbed with the other hand the goods in a shop. But before he could withdraw his hand, he was caught on the spot and handed over to the local yamen.

  他这样反反复复,折腾了整整一天。最后,他妻子不耐烦了,便随口敷衍了一句:“看不见!”

  哪知道他一听,欣喜若狂,转身跑到大街上,一手举着树叶,一手去捞店铺里的东西。可是他的手还没来得及缩回,就被人当场抓住,扭送到衙门里去了。

  When autumn came, all the water in the large and small rivers rose higher and flowed into the Yellow River.

  The surface of the River at once appeared much wider, On one side of the bank, one couldn’t see the cattle and sheep on the opposite side. The River deity Hebo was therefore immensely proud and considered himself the greatest in the world.

  Hero followed the Yellow River to the North Sea. Then he looked at himself and felt he could not see the bounds of the sea. Then he looked at himself and felt he was so tiny and insignificant. He sighed and said to Hairuo, the deity of the North Sea.

  “Asa the saying goes, a person who has gained a little learning duanwenw.com tends to regard himself as the wiset person under the sky. I am just that kind of person.   一到秋天,大河、小河里的水都涨了起来,流入黄河,河面顿时显得非常宽广。

  在河岸的这边,一眼望不见对岸的牛羊。黄河的河伯因此得意洋洋,自以为是天下最伟大的了。

  河伯顺着黄河来到了北海,朝东一望,望不见海的尽头,再看看自己才觉得自己很渺小。他叹了口气,对北海之神海若说:

  “俗话说得好,有了一点学问,就以为老子天下第一。我就是这种人。今天,我看到你这样宽广、这样伟大,才发觉自己如此渺小,如此无知。如果今天没遇见你,我恐怕永远会被有见识的人所讥笑。”

  海若说:

  “我们不能同井底的青蛙谈海,是因为青蛙受到住处的限制;不能同夏天的小虫受到季节的限制;不能同浅薄的人谈论高深的学问,是因为他们的知识太少。现在,你走出小河,来到北海,看到海的伟大,知道了自己的渺小。有了这种谦虚的态度,我就可以和你谈论高深的学问了。”
