The Canal Pioneers, by Chris Lewis. James Brindley is recognized as one of the leading early canal engineers. He was also a major player in training others in the art of canal planning and building. Chris Lewis will explain how Brindley made such a positive contribution to the education of that group of early “civil engineers”.
December 5th
Ice for the Metropolis, by Malcolm Tucker. Well before the arrival of freezers, there was a demand for ice for food preservation and catering, Malcolm will explain the history of importing natural ice and the technology of building ice wells, and how London’s ice trade grew.
February 6th
An Update on the Cotsword Canals, by Liz Payne. The StroudwaterCanal is moving towards reopening. The Thames and SevernCanal will take a little longer. We will have a report on the present state of play.
March 6th
Eyots and Aits -ThamesIslands, by Miranda Vickers. The Thames has many islands. Miranda has undertaken a review of all of them. She will tell us about those of greatest interest.

There's nothing sadder than reading about a lost child in the newspaper or seeing the story of a child missing on the news.Fortunately for us as parents there is a way to avoid this type of tragedy through GPS tracking for children.Global positioning system technology can make it so that we need not worry about our children being lost as much as we used to in the past.
GPS systems for kids are small devices that can be worn like a pager (呼机), implanted in a watch or attached to the child's clothing or backpack.It will then deliver information to you about the child's location at all times providing you with peace of mind.The GPS systems can be programmed to send information in intervals as short as 15 seconds.
You can imagine how much more relaxed you would be when you're able to log your computer at any time and know within several yards exactly where your child is.Some of the GPS kids units even have a panic button that the child can push to send an immediate alert(警报) in case of an emergency.This notification will go both to you and to the GPS tracking service so that authorities can be alerted.
For small children the GPS tracking device can be as small as a watch or pager and will run on batteries for up to 24 hours before needing to be recharged.For older children you can even place a device in their cars to monitor their driving habits and where they are driving.Personal GPS units for kids are not cheap and the smaller the device the higher the price.Can you really say that anything is too expensive when discussing the safety and wellbeing of your children? In addition to the cost of the device, you will also need to pay a fee to the GPS tracking service.In the world we live in sometimes it is difficult to be safe and these GPS kids systems can provide many parents with added peace of mind.

Xiaoice, Microsoft's latest artificial intelligence robot, was briefly released in 2014, and returned to WeChat in 2015, where she became a big hit. "Her incredible learning ability was why people loved to talk with Xiaoice," Liu Jinchang, a researcher at High-tech Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Science and Technology, told China Daily. Apart from her ability to identify photos and send emojis(表情符号)in conversations, Xiaoice gains 45 percent of her knowledge from interacting with users, China Daily reported.
Chatbot programs first appeared in the mid-1960s in the US. Driven by top tech companies, they are becoming smarter and more common. For instance, IBM's latest artificial intelligence program served as an academic consultant at Australia's DeakinUniversity, answering students' questions about course schedules and financial aid. Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa have been used as voice assistants who can read news, play music and even make jokes for their users.
These programs are expected to move beyond smartphones, into televisions, cars and living rooms, The New York Times pointed out. However, it may take decades before scientists develop a "Samantha", the advanced chatbot seen in the fiction film Her. In the film, Samantha sparks a romantic relationship with her user played by US actor Joaquin Phoenix. Many viewers were enthusiastic about this fantasy of virtual soul mates.
