In early autumn I applied for admission to college. I wanted to go nowhere but to CornellUniversity, but my mother fought strongly against it. When she saw me studying a photograph of my father on the sports ground of Cornell, she tore it up.

“You can’t say it’s not a great university, just because Papa went there.”

“That’s not it at all. And it is a top university.”She was still holding the pieces in her hand. “But we can’t afford to send you to college.”

“I wouldn’t dream of asking you for money. Do you want me to get a job to help support you and Papa? Things aren’t that bad, are they?”

“No,”she said. “I don’t expect you to help support us.”

Father borrowed money from his rich cousins to start a small jewelry shop. His chief customers were his old college friends. To get new customers, my mother had to help. She picked up a long-forgotten membership in the local league of women, so that she could get to know more people. Whether those people would turn into customers was another question. I knew that my parents had to wait for quite a long time before their small investment (投资) could show returns. What’s more, they had not wanted enough to be rich and successful; otherwise they could not possibly have managed their lives so badly.

I was torn between the desire to help them and change their lives, and the determination not to repeat their mistakes. I had a strong belief in my power to get what I wanted. After months of hard study I won a full college scholarship. My father could hardly contain his pride in me, and my mother eventually gave in before my success.

Disease spread in many ways. An infected person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if those surfaces could clean themselves?

Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they’ve developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact.

The idea is simple: Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99.8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.

Research by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and viruses, notes 17-year-old Sum Ming(“Simon”) Wong. He and schoolmate Kin Pong (“Michael”) Li,18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.

After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide is known to kill bacteria. It’s already used in many products, from paints to desserts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.

Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.

To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass, Each end fits into a bracket (托架). Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode(LED). From it comes UV light.

And here’s the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle.

The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about (about 81 yuan) to build.

  24. The ways diseases spread are mentioned at the beginning of the text to ________.

  B. remind readers of the importance of cleaning their hands

  C. explain how to kill bacteria or viruses effectively

  D. help to describe a new invention that prevents diseases from spreading

  C. works better at night than in the daytime

  D. is made of a metal that can take in UV light

  26. The LED is placed inside the brackets to _______.

  A. supply enough power to the handle system

  B. produce titanium dioxide to kill bacteria

  C. provide UV light to help titanium dioxide work better

  D. direct the UV light in sunlight to the coated surface

  27. What is the author’s attitude toward Michael and Simon’s door handle system?

  A. Cautious B. Critical

  C. Enthusiastic D. Disappointed

For as long as I can remember, I have had a friend through a friend of my mother’s. My mom and her mom met through a skiing group for people with disabilities. I am disabled, and her mother is disabled.

We lived about 45 miles away from each other and so we didn’t grow up together, but we spent as much time together as possible. Often we spent the night at each other’s house and, of course, we went on ski trips together with our mothers. We even went to summer camps together. This was often a challenge, being that she was able-bodied and I was not.. A lot of times there were activities I just couldn’t keep up with, or sometimes wasn’t able to participate at all.

A couple of summers, I also tried attending summer camps for kids with disabilities. While I had a disability, it was pretty mild compared to most of the kids at these types of camps. However, sometimes I was left terribly bored with not enough physical activity for me.

One year, this friend of mine and I signed up to go to Girl Scout camp together. I don’t know who decided this, but someone decided to put me with the younger kids, thinking it would be much better for me. My friend stayed with me, We were both miserable, due to the fact that we were the only girls in our group that passed the highest levels of tests for things, and there weren’t enough counselors(管理员) to take us to do the activities we were qualified for.

I will never forget what this friend did for me by sticking with(紧跟) me through the whole two weeks. She never complained! And, not only did she stick with me, she did everything she could to try and make it more fun, for both of us.

  C. Life without a friend is death without a witness.

D.A ready way to lose friend is to lend him money.

29.From the passage ,we can know that____________.

  A. the author’s friend was also handicapped(残疾)

  B. the author’s mother worked in a skiing group.

  C. the author had a good time with her friend.

  D. the author was able to ski the way normal person does.

30.Why does a summer camp together mean a challenge?[:]

  A. Because the author couldn’t perform well.

  B. Because her friend disliked taking her.

  C. Because the author had trouble following others.

  D. Because her friend was a healthy person.

  31.The third paragraph implies that____________.

  A. the author’s disability was more serious.

  B. the author is a determined person.

  C. all the disabled children liked the camps.

  D. the camps didn’t offer enough activities.

Picking a university is a tense period of asking yourself which institution is most relevant. That’s why university rankings play such a vital role in students searching for their next academic direction. Rankings are also an inescapable part of the reputation and brand image of universities. “ No university website is complete without the claim to be in the top 100 for something or other,” reported the BBC. The reason is simple: rankings help them to attract students, staff and research investment.

Currently there are numbers of university rankings, and each has its own list of criteria. But the main categories are the same: academic reputations, graduates’ performance and faculty resources.

However, experts point out the ranking process isn’t entirely reliable. Mark Kantrowitz, a US financial aid researcher, said university rankings were mostly just for show. He wrote in The New York Times,“ It may give your parents better bragging rights, but that’s about it.”

Moreover,it’s not difficult to see the limitations of university rankings. Many rankings focus on the number of times research work is cited(引用) by other researchers. It helps British and US universities to dominate global rankings because English is the favored language of academia,John O’Leary,a member of the QS Global Academic Advisory Board, told The Guardian.

Also, rankings such as QS mainly focus on the qualities of the university rather than its students. “Any university ranking is likely to help students make better decisions about where to study, but the need to balance them with other more human factors is also important,” said Phil Moss,an education and admissions consultant. “Advice from graduates or current students can be valuable in providing a genuine insight into the experience or quality of a particular degree program. It can also add an element that rankings can never convey—the actual emotion of a university experience.”

  32. Why do universities consider rankings important?

  A. Rankings make them more appealing.

  B. Rankings are students’ only reference.

  C. Rankings can increase their academic level.

  D. Rankings help them complete their websites.

  33. What does the underlined “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

  A. Academic research work. B. The number of researches.

  C. The way of ranking universities. D. The limitations of university rankings.

  34. According to John O’Leary, what helps British and US universities rank well?

  A. The wide use of English in academia.

  B. Their outstanding qualities.

  C. Their graduates’ excellent performance.

  D. The academia’s favor to them.

  35. Besides rankings, what does Phil Moss suggest you should refer to if you’re picking a university?

  A. Investment in education. B. Guidance from professors.

  C. Information on websites. D. Suggestions from students.

TeamBuilding Tips for a Successful Team

If you want to create more effective groups and teams in the workplace, try putting a few of these tips into practice. 36

Communicate team goals clearly and often! 37 It’s natural that we all work harder if we know what we are working towards and why. Be sure to communicate goals more than once, or they aren’t likely to be remembered or understood clearly. Encourage team members to talk about the team goals, and ask questions until they are clear.:]

38 Everyone on your team should know what they are responsible for – both in their overall job and for each project they are working on. This makes it easier to stay on track. It also reduces the chance that some important things will get no attention or little effort spent on them.

Ask for help and give it too. You can survive on your own, or you can succeed with others’ help. If someone offers to help you, accept it. If you need help, ask for it. 39 Knowing when to ask for help is vital for your team’s success. And being willing to help your colleagues is a sign of a great team member.

40 For each of us, it’s more satisfying to work in areas of our natural strengths. We can work to our full potential, and reduce the feeling of frustration that come with not knowing what to do. One of the great benefits of working as part of a team is to have someone who can quickly and easily do something that would take another person many hours.

  A. Attend the meeting regularly.[:]

  B. Define individual responsibilities.

  C. Make full use of team members’ strengths.

  D. You’re sure to see improvements in your team environment.

  E. Discuss with your team the specific goals that need to be achieved.

  F. Even if you are talented, you cannot know and do everything alone.

  G. A sporting event or lunch in the park or restaurant can make your team better.
