  第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

  阅读下列短文,从每小题后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

  A

The UK has a well-¬respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all, sometimes it can be confusing.

October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar. Universities have something called Freshers’ Week for their newcomers. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.

However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-¬wracking (令人头痛的). Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join?

Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don’t rush into anything that you’ll regret for the next three years.

Here is some top advice from past students on how to survive Freshers’ Week:

●Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette (礼节). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.

●Be kind. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends.

●Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you’ll be to meet new people than those who never leave their room.

●Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you’re in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you’re friendly.

So with a bit of clever planning and effort, Freshers’ Week can give you a great start to your university life and soon you’ll be passing on your experience to next year’s new recruits.

Coca-Cola is probably the most famous brand in the world, and in some areas you can even access it easier than clean drinkable water. Although the company is trying to present itself as a health-conscious company, you can’t really say that drinking cola is healthy for you. Still, we all drink cola, some more and some less, and we tell ourselves that it’s all okay as long as we don’t overdo it. However, Coca-Cola has other functions besides drinking.

Cola removes the tarnish(暗锈) from old pennies. Got some old rusty pennies? Not to worry! Put them inside a glass of cola and let them rest for a while. When you get them out, you’ll have shiny pennies that will look as if they were coined a couple of days ago. If you couldn’t clean those pennies with industrial acids, just buy a can of cola and let it do its magic!

You can remove gum from your hair with cola. If you’ve got gum stuck in your hair and don’t know a better way to get it out, don’t worry, you won’t have to cut it. Just pour some cola into a bowl and dip the part of your hair with gum on it inside. Leave it for a couple of minutes and then simply wipe off the gum.

You can make an exploding fountain. You probably know about this one. You can make an exploding fountain by putting a mint(薄荷糖) inside a two-liter bottle. Then move away from the bottle and get ready for a Coca-Cola explosion. This is a fun thing to do, but it is also a warning — don’t eat a mint and drink cola at the same time, because a similar thing could happen to your stomach.

24.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 imply?

  A. The expense of Coca-Cola is low.

  B. Coca-Cola enjoys great popularity.

  C. Coca-Cola is safe for people to drink.

  D. Coca-Cola is harder to get than drinkable water.

25.What can cola be used to do?

  A. Improve people’s hair.

  B. Dissolve the gum.

  C. Make pennies shiny.

  D. Take the place of acids.

26.Why can’t we eat a mint and drink cola at the same time?

  A. It can cause harm to our stomach.

  B. It might make our stomach smaller.

  C. Mints with cola will produce heat.

  D. The mint will release poisonous substances.

27.What’s the main idea of the text?

  A. The major ingredients of Coca-Cola.

  B. Why Coca-Cola is popular among the young.

  C. Some of the strangest uses of Coca-Cola.

  D. Why we can’t drink Coca-Cola too often.

  C

While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we all take for granted—being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of hot steaming pizza. Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution to the third one, thanks to this cool 3-D pizza printer!

About a year ago, NASA offered 5 ,000 to Anjan Contractor, a 3-D technology expert, to build a device (设备) that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza made in common ovens.

Late last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype (原型) that begins by creating a single slice of dough (面团) that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato “sauce” — a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and finally, a protein slice that resembles cheese. While the video doesn’t show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed, it can be ready to be consumed in 7 seconds.

While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover, Anjan Contractor is far from ready for astronauts. That’s because he still has to find a solution to make the food container in the printer last for 30 years. Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not.

Anjan Contractor believes that the only way that is possible is that the water is removed from all the ingredients (配料) and then they are reduced to the powder form. This, as you can imagine, will not be so easy. But, while the printer may not be ready for space, it certainly looks ready enough for people on earth. Hopefully, NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars!

  28. The author mentions what astronauts in space cannot do in the first paragraph in order to?

  A. To persuade us not to take ordinary things for granted.

  B. To show they live a difficult life there.

  C. To show their life is boring in space.

  D. To introduce the topic of the text “3-D pizza printer”.

  29. NASA offered $ 125, 000 to Anjan Contractor mainly to _______.

  A. create some new type of 3-D printer

  B. attract more companies to work for NASA

  C. help astronauts in space enjoy fresh pizza one day

  D. produce pizza in large quantities to earn great profits

  30. The biggest challenge that Anjan Contractor is faced with now is probably that _______.

  A. he has no money left to go on with his research

  B. the pizza doesn’t seem appetizing to pizza lovers

  C. he has no way to make pizza that can last for thirty years

  D. he cannot make the food container last for decades

  31. What’s the best title of the passage?

  A. NASA is trying its best to help astronauts eat better

  B. Astronauts may soon be able to enjoy steaming hot pizza

  C. NASA is working on making pizza for common people

  D. A 3-D pizza printer has been used to make pizza

  D

As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes (笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students. Almost all their assignment and essays are typed on a computer.

All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.

It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.

“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”

“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”

Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “ Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”

To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

  32. The underlined expression “taking stock in” in paragraph 4 probably means___.

  A. getting bored with B. getting dependent on

  C. becoming crazy about D. getting curious about

  33. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because____.

  A. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently

  B. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays

  C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character

  D. computers have become a trend and fashion in China

  34. Which of the following statement is NOT true of the advantage of handwriting?

  A. Handwriting contains the writer’s emotions.

  B. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.

  C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence.

  D. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting.

  35. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

  A. To Type or to Handwrite.

  B. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing.

  C. Writing by Computer Will Replace Writing by Hand.

  D. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters.

  第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。

What will you do if you can’t eat everything bought in the canteen? 36 According to a survey, what students waste every year could feed over 10 million people.

37 According to Xinhua News Agency, the food wasted by Chinese people is about 50 million tons of grain every year, which could feed 200 million people.

Food waste, which has become a global issue, serves as a mirror that reflects various cultural and social issues in different countries. In the West, for instance, consumerism, the belief that it’s good to use a lot of goods and services, is often to blame for food waste. 38 Chinese people are well known for being hospitable and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food. On campus, a generation of single children is less aware of the food waste issue. Students nowadays are well protected by their families and hardly have any concept of how much toil others go through in order to provide them with the food they eat.

39 There are 925 million hungry people in the world. They don’t have enough food to eat . And farmers work very hard to grow the crops. 40 It’s also important that everyone thinks about how they can do their bit to reduce food waste. Recently a campaign against food waste launched on line in China might make you think twice about being so wasteful.

  A. But canteen waste is merely the tip of the iceberg.

  B. So we shouldn’t waste our food.

  C. Students can never realize the serious food waste situation.

  D. Most of us would simply throw away any leftover food.

  E. Students waste is extremely serious.

  F. To reduce food waste is a big task, and it needs time.

  G. China, in turn, features its own eating culture.
