Just when we thought we had seen all the magical things that 3D printing can do , here comes another- A working artificial leg has transformed the life of a little Canadian duckling(小鸭子)called Dudley, who had been struggling to get by after losing a leg.

The story began on August 19th, 2013, when the newly-born healthy Dudley and his brother, were placed inside a chicken coo(笼子)at the K9-1-1 Animal and Rescue Services in Sicamous, British Columbia. Within a few hours, an aggressive chicken attacked the two, killing Dudley’s brother and leaving him with a disability!

While Dudley could swim with his single leg, he had a hard time walking on the firm ground. Determined to help him, Doug Nelson, the owner of the shelter decided to consult Terence Loring, founder of a design firm that among other things also offers 3D printing designs.

Given that he had just launched 3 pillar Designs, Terence somewhat hesitated to take on a duckling as his first client(客户). But as soon as he saw brave little Dudley walking around on one leg, Terence knew he had to do something. Using his biomedical engineering training, Terence s pent the next few weeks creating a 3D template (模板), after he found out how ducks’ legs worked in YouTube videos about ducks. Once ready, he sent them to Ontario-based 3Dengineering firm Proto3000, who agreed to print the leg.

The second artificial leg was much stronger than the first one. When the artificial leg that is printed from strong ABS(a thermoplastic(热塑性塑料)that becomes soft and moldable when heated )and attached to a foot designed from soft and flexible rubber-like plastic, was fitted on Dudley, his whole manner changed. He wagged his tail and showed it off to his best friend -A pig called Elsie.

Of course, as Dudley has been growing, the leg and foot have had to be replaced. But that hasn’t bothered Terence who continues to improve the design. The best part is that Terence has put all the designs on his website so that anyone wishing to help out an animal suffering from a similar injury can do so, by simply hitting the print button on his/her 3D printer!

  28. How did Dudley lose his leg?

  A. He wasn’t well looked after. B. He lost it in a traffic accident.

  C. He lost it in a chicken attack. D. He was born with a disability.

  29. What do we know about Terence Loring’s design firm?

  A. It is the first one to offer 3D printing designs.

  B. 3D designs are only part of their services.

  C. Their main clients are injured animals.

  D. They often cooperate with Proto 3000

  30. What did Terence first do to make an artificial leg for Dudley?

  A. Consulting Dudley’s owner about the solution.

  B. Creating a 3D template with the help of Proto3000.

  C. Being trained in biomedical engineering.

  D. Watching You Tube videos bout ducks.

  31. To Terence’s great satisfaction, ______.

  A. Dudley has got a permanent artificial leg

  B. a possible solution has been found to help suffering animals.

  C. he succeeded in his first attempt to make Dudley an artificial leg.

  D. his design has become widely known online.

Frozen fruit and vegetables can be healthier, with higher levels of vitamins and cancer fighting antioxidants (抗氧化剂), that leafy “fresh” produce. Two independent studies found more beneficial nutrients in everything from frozen broccoli florets to carrots. In two out of three cases frozen fruit and vegetables scored better on antioxidant-type compounds(化合物). Consumption of these antioxidant compounds is considered beneficial in preventing cancer and supporting the wording of the body, brain, skin and eyes.

Produce bought from the supermarket greengr ocer sections is full of color, while many stores even use fine mist sprays (喷剂)to give a just picked look. This supermarket theatre convinces shoppers to pay an extra payment for food t hat they believe is good for their family’s health as well as being tasty. However, the reality is that these vegetables and fruit may well have been held in storage for a month, while they then sit in the fridge at home for days before being eaten.

Over the days, they gradually deteriorate, slowly losing some of the nutrients associated with leafy greens and fruit. By contrast, frozen vegetables and fruit are chilled(冷藏)soon after harvest and so keep higher levels of vitamins and antioxidants until they are eaten.

Two teams, one form Leatherhead Food Research and the other from the University of Chester, carried out 40 tests to measure nutrient levels in produce which had been sitting in a fridge for three days and the frozen equivalent (相等物). The findings show that eating newly picked produce is the healthiest option; however, frozen food can be almost as good and is often better than items sold as “fresh”. Leatherhead’s Dr Rachel Burch said: “We must ignore the mistaken opinion that fresh food is always better for us than frozen food.”

These results show that frozen food can be nutritionally comparable to fresh produce. Direct comparison: In two out of three cases frozen fruit and vegetable scored better on antioxidant-type compounds including Vitamin C, polyphenols and anthocyanins (多酚和花青素), a study found. Her team found frozen broccoli had higher levels of Vitamin C. However, fresh food scored better on polyphenols, which are thought to help prevent cancer.

  32. What does the passage mainly tell us?

  A. Fresh food is better that frozen food. B. Frozen food might cause cancer.

  C. Frozen food is as good as fresh food. D. Frozen food is better than “fresh” food.

  33. Why do some supermarkets spray fine mist on fruit and vegetables?

  A. To keep them in good quality. B. To make them taste good.

  C. To make them look fresh. D. To make them sell cheaply.

  34. What does the underlined word “deteriorate ” in Paragraph 3 mean?

  A. Grow worse. B. Grow better.

  C. Remain the same. D. Die out.

  35. What is more helpful in preventing cancer?

  A. Vitamin C. B. Frozen fruit and vegetables.

  C. Fresh fruit and vegetables. D. Anthocyanins.
