To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.

Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers, only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day… they will lose all taste of learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will find children talking, reading, painting, cooking, working on computers, studying French, playing the piano, climbing trees, or just running around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!

The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget (预算,经费), and even which staff they want and do not want anymore.

When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell(叫喊,呼喊). But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing (抑制,压抑)anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙;激素).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

The next great land area that man hopes to control is the moon. In size it is nearly equal to the area of North and South America. However, it presents a hostile (不友好的) environment. Temperatures range +120 to -150 degrees Centigrade. There is no air, and no water.

Today there is considerable scientific speculation (思索) about living on the moon. When man will begin life on the moon surface is still not determined. But experts believe that settlement will take place in three steps. First, there will be increasing periods of exploration with temporary shelters (临时住所). These periods will be followed by longer stays with housing under the surface of the moon and daily necessities brought by the settlers themselves from the earth. Finally, settlements that are self-supporting will be founded.

The main job of the early settlers will be to stay alive. They will have to plant crops under huge domes (圆顶屋) to produce food and oxygen and find water sources. After this is done, the settlers will have time to explore the possibilities of commercial (商业的) development and to make discoveries important to science. The characteristics of the moon that make it bad for human staying alive may make it ideal for certain kinds of manufacturing (制造业). Operations requiring a vacuum (真空) or extreme cold are examples. Therefore, industrial diamonds might be produced on the moon.

  49. The area of the moon is _________.

  A. about the same as that of North and South America

  B. larger than that of North and South America

  C. hardly equal to that of North and South America

  D. far smaller than that of North and South America

  50. To stay alive on the moon, the early settlers must first of all be able to ________.

  A. get enough food, oxygen and water

  B. develop commerce

  C. make discoveries important

  D. explore the possibilities of industrial development

  51. Though the environment on the moon is bad for human staying alive, it is very good for ________.

  A. medical operations

  B. all kinds of manufactured goods

  C. making such things as industrial diamonds

  D. commercial development

There was a story many years ago of a school teacher--- Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.

Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume.

Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.” After the children left ,she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M. D.

The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

“Excuse me, sir, I believe I owe(欠) you this.” I 59 the money into his hand.

  第三部分 阅读理解 (共20小题。每小题2分,满分40分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黒。

  A

Being thirteen has certain problems that only another thirteen-year-old would understand. The biggest, I think, is learning to get along well with adults. I have found that when dealing with grown-ups, it is wise to remember two things.

  1.Always use your head

  2.Never use your head

For instance, one day just before supper, my mother sent me to the store for a loaf of whole-wheat bread. They didn’t have any. When I told my mother, she said, “Well, what kind did you get?” I told her I didn’t get any. She looked as if I had just announced that I was leaving home for good. “For goodness’ sake!” She said, “If they hadn’t had whole-wheat, you should have got something else! Why don’t you use your head?”

Not long after that, she sent me to the store for red oilcloth. They didn’t have any, so I bought seven yards of purple. I thought it was pretty. Mother didn’t. She said, “Who ever heard of purple oilcloth in a red kitchen?” I told her I was only trying to use my head. She said. “Well, don’t ! And in the future, if you can’t get what I send you for, don’t get anything.”

  See what I mean?

There are other things that seem a little strange, too. If my father goes out for the evening, he tells me to “look after” my mother and sister. But if the family goes out, and I want to stay home, my father won’t let me. He doesn’t feel comfortable if I am home alone. That means I am old enough to “look after” my mother and sister but not old enough to “look after” myself.

Another problem is what to do when you trip over the cat and land with your head in the refrigerator, causing a large lump(肿块) to appear just over the right eyebrow. In that case, your father could feel free to say with a few choice words. Your sister could shed(流出) enough tears to dampen the whole room. Your mother could, and probably would, do both. But you? You are thirteen and can’t do anything! You are too young to curse(咒骂), and “big boys” don’t cry. So you just stand there looking more stupid than usual. But in spite of all this I still think thirteen is a wonderful age!

61.The main idea of the passage is that____.

  A.young children are boring

  D.thirteen-year-old boys have special problems

65.The author believes being a boy of thirteen is ____.

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries—in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus—obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

  66. We learn from Paragraph 1 that ____.

  A. the government is usually the first to name a place

  B. many places tend to have more than one name

  C. a ceremony will be held when a place is named

  D. people prefer the place names given by the government

  67. What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

  A. change suddenly. B. change violently.

  C. disappear gradually. D. disappear very slowly.

  68. Which of the following places is named after a person?

  A. Raffles Place. B. Selector Airbase. C. Piccadilly Circus. D. Paya Lebar Crescent.

  69. Bras Basah Road is named ____.

  A. after a person B. after a place C. after an activity D. by its shape

  70. What can be inferred from the passage?

  A. Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.

  B. Some places in Singapore are named for military (军事的) purposes.

  C. The way Singaporeans name their places is special.

  D. Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, the aged, and children who have lost their parents, but also friends, workmates, relatives and neighbors whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.

Over 60 years ago, when a Cleveland man noticed that some people, such as children who lost their parents and patients who lay in bed, too often felt forgotten and neglected, he developed in his mind the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving them small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he gave those people small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. Over time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the poor, the sick and children who had lost their parents was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. Soon the idea spread to other cities all over the USA.

Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.

Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift giving, Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care, in a positive way.

  71. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

  A. Sweetest Day is a day to make others happy.

  B. Sweetest Day is just an occasion to care about disabled people.

  C. Sweetest Day is an occasion for lovers to express love.

  D. Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in October.

  72. Which of the following has little relationship to Sweetest Day?

  A. Visiting sick people of the hospital.

  B. Visiting children who have lost their parents.

  C. Giving friends small gifts.

  D. Giving flowers to sweethearts.

  73. What is Cleveland?

  A. An island. B. A country. C. A village in England. D. A city in America.

  74. What do most people usually do to show their care to others according to the passage?

  A. They give money. B. They give gifts. C. They send regards. D. They offer help.

  75. The underlined word “neglected” in the second paragraph means “____”.

  A. remembered B. hated C. paid little or no attention to D. disappointed

  阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

  A

In 1901,H.G.Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the “moon people” they met. In turn, the “moon people” expressed their surprise. “Why,” they asked, “are you traveling to outer space when you don’t even use your inner space?”

H.G.Wells could only imagine travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people” asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.

Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The “Channel”,a tunnel connecting England and France, is now complete.

But what about underground cities?Japan’s Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called “Alice Cities”. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome would cover the whole city.

Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth’s space. The space, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H.G.Wells “moon people” would agree. Would you?

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.

  61. What does this passage mainly talk about?

  A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

  B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

  C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

  D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

  62. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

  A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty.

  C. It improves personal abilities. D. It encourages individual efforts.

  63. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means ______.

  A. those who try their best to win

  B. those who value competition most highly

  C. those who are against competition most strongly

  D. those who rely on others most for success

  64. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”?

  A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.

  B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.

  C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.

  D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.

  65. Which point of view may the author agree to?

  A. Every effort should be paid back.

  B. Competition should be encouraged.

  C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

  D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
