The Republic of the Fiji Islands is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean about 2,000 km northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. Fiji consists of 322 islands (of which 106 are inhabited) and 522 smaller islets. The climate in Fiji is tropical marine and warm most of the year round with minimal extremes. The island state is inhabited by the native Fijians and other minorities like the Indo-Fijians and other smaller groups. The religion in Fiji is also diverse and every religious group gets equal opportunities.

The Fijians consider their national costume a representative of the culture of Fiji. The national costume of Fiji in the earlier times used to be loin cloths for men and grass skirts for women. The skirt lengths would determine the status of a woman. A single woman used to wear short skirts but long skirts had to be worn by married women. The national dress of the Fijians now is Sulu. The Sulu resembles a skirt and both genders wear it.

The Fijians are pretty easy-going, but if you are invited into a village, wear simple clothing and take off your hat (wearing one is an insult to the chief). Leave your shoes outside the door when entering a home and keep in mind that it’s also insulting to touch someone’s head. When visiting a village, it is customary to present a gift of kava (卡瓦酒). The gift will cost less than F for a half kilo. If you are accompanied by a guide, he or she will prepare that. Be prepared to shake hands and answer personal questions like, where are you from, are you married, how many children do you have and so on.

  41. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the first paragraph?

From 1993 to 1998, I was a seller for Chevrolet. Each week I would take a look at their used cars that were for sale. I would fix cracks in leather, cigarette burns in fabric, re-color carpets that had stains (污点), repair windshields that had been hit, etc.

Every week I would walk into this specific Chevrolet dealer’s used car lot to see what the used cars needed in the way of repairs. The manager’s wife was named Cindy. Cindy was always very rude, treating me like she was better than me. I was always positive and kind, but that never seemed to work with her.

One day she accused (指责) me of charging her to dye the carpet in a mini-van that had a stain on the carpet. She had driven the van for the weekend and said the stain was not there. Just trying to continually be aggressive without cause, she accused me in front of all her colleagues that day.

However, instead of being angry at being looked upon as someone that was not honest, I went to a florist and spent almost 0 on red roses and put them in a nice basket. I picked out a card, and stated that I was sorry for the misunderstanding and that I did not ever have the intention of making her angry.

The following week, I walked into her office like I did every week with my list of used cars that needed some attention before they were sold and said, “Hi, Cindy,” with my usual happy and up-beat attitude. She gave me a big smile and said, “You bought me flowers.” Every week thereafter she would always make it a point to say, “Hey, Mike, how are you doing?” or “Nice to see you, how are you?”

This woman began to change, perhaps because of this small act of kindness. It was actually so nice to see Cindy’s whole way of being — change with me. She was always very kind, and would always have a big smile when I walked into her office.

I guess people can change with a little bit of kindness!

Based on a scientific survey of 18- to 30-year-olds, researchers from MSU’s Eli Broad Graduate School of Management found that young consumers will not pay an extra high price for an automobile simply because it is environmentally friendly. Instead, the determining factor — by far — is fuel efficiency (效率).

Clay Voorhees, a researcher, said the findings indicate an eco-savvy generation is challenging the economic reality of paying bills. “The previous assumption (假想) that they are a spoiled generation couldn’t be further from the truth,” Voorhees said. “Generation Y is maturing into a pragmatic (务实的) generation that not only wants to do the right thing for the environment but also has real economic concerns.”

According to the study, young consumers will pay only class="main">

Jeremy Vanisacker, an MSU graduate student, said at the beginning he was surprised that his fellow Gen Y’ers needed such a large economic incentive to buy an eco-friendly car. But the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. “We’ve grown up with a green mindset (思想倾向) but we haven’t really had to pay for it. Think about roadside recycling and free social networks. As a generation we’ve come to expect more for less.”

Voorhees said the auto manufacturers need to do a better job of educating consumers on the financial benefits of owning eco-friendly vehicles, which typically cost more than conventional vehicles but eventually pay for themselves over time.

  51. According to the scientific survey, young consumers _______.

  A. can’t afford cars of high prices

  B. appreciate conventional cars

  53. Young consumers prefer to pay for cars that run farther because they _______.

  A. are fond of hybrid cars B. have an economic motivation

  C. wouldn’t accept the hybrids

  第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

[1] Simply speaking, inflation (通货膨胀) is when the cost of goods or services in a country increases more rapidly than income. Inflation is directly related to the costs of production, marketing, doing business and supply and demand. When the government increases taxes, especially taxes on businesses, the cost of doing business increases, which brings an increase in the cost of goods and services to the common consumers. The consumers’ income can not buy as much goods today as it did last week, purchasing (购买) power decreases and prices continue to increase.

[2] Low inflation can often be _________, so none of us really pay much attention to it. We get worried only when it turns into a serious one and begins to scare us. For example, in the United States, it is well known among financial (金融的) planners that the average (平均的) rate of inflation over a long period of time is 4%. When the rate of inflation hits the worker at a higher percentage, then it warns Americans of true inflation.

[3] So in an average year, with an average 4% rate of inflation, people do not necessarily feel a clear effect. This is especially true if our employers give us a raise — that keeps us level or ahead of inflation. It is when our income does not keep up with inflation that we begin to “feel” the inflation bite.

  Dear Jack,

I am glad to hear that you and your parents are going to travel in Yunnan. To make your travel a comfortable and pleasant one, I would like to tell you some taboos about the Yi people.

When you are on a visit to a Yi’s house, never whistle and make noises. When a Yi’s family member is ill, never say words like death and injury. Never praise a young baby using the words such as “The baby is so fat, pretty or heavy!” We Yi people don’t eat the meat of monkeys, dogs or cats, so never take such meat to a Yi’s house. During a dinner, you should remember not to carry the food to the host or the hostess.

I am sure you will have a good memory if you follow the local traditions here. I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

  Yours,
