He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill (溢出)the water he carried.

As I came closer, I saw 5 sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked straight up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. But the deer 6 hurt him nor even moved as Billy got down. And then I saw a baby deer 7 on the ground, thirsty, lift its head to lap up(舔) the water in my boy’s hands. When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to a tap. Billy opened it and let the drip slowly fill up his “cup”.

8 he stood up and began to turn back, I was there in front of him. His little eyes 9 with tears. Very quickly, he explained 10 he was not wasting water. In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.

The express0ion was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.

It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States.“Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers throughout the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don't all have the same coffee culture. In Europe for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed, when Starbucks (星巴克) coffee shops spread throughout the country.

The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington,in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.

Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment (设备) . He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company's head of marketing (市场营销).

In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso (浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores in the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.

However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing (竞争) for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the comfortable environment offered by Starbucks.

Suppose you are hiking with your family somewhere in the mountain in Dan Xia Mountain, you need to find the direction of south to find your way back. But none of your family members can read the map and actually knows where the family is. Never mind. The sun is shining and it’s still morning. If you don't know the exact time, you can still find out where south is, but you'll need to be patient.

①Find a straight stick and put it in the ground in a place where you can mark its shadow.

②Try to put the stick as vertically (垂直) as you can. You can check this by making a simple plumb line (铅锤线) with a piece of string (绳子) and weight. You haven't got any string? Ok, use a thread from your clothes with a button tied at the end to act as a weight.

③ After the stick is put vertically, you can see its shadow on the ground. Mark the end of the shadow.

④ Wait about half an hour and mark the end of the shadow again.

⑤ Keep doing this until you have made several marks.

⑥ The mark nearest the stick will show the shortest shadow when it is midday, because at that time the sun is highest in the sky and pointing to the exact south.

⑦ Pick a point in the distance along the line between the shortest shadow and the stick.

⑧ That point is south of where you are.
