Christmas is considered a major holiday in the United States.Shopping malls have big sales,every-body gets happier,and everywhere shows red and green.As early as one month before December 25th,houses in the residential areas would be dressed up with flashing lights,ornaments,and sculptures.Normally lifeless downtown steets would be illuminated by trees featuring dazzling lights,and skyscrapers would join in with decorations hanging down from top to bottom.

The Christmas spirit permeates throughout the country.Starting three or four days before Christmas,employees go home on their vacation,and students begin their winter break.All the major transportation systems like trains,buses,and airplanes are all full of people returing to their families.After two weeks,people return to work feeling refreshed to go about their regular activities.

Schools like to give out lots of awards.These awards serve the purpose of honoring the ones receiving them and also encouraging the others to do better.This strategy works,but by giving out too many,the awards could become commonplace and less important.

One type of awards is the excellence award.They give this to one person in each grade level who ranked first in a subject area.The subjects include math,science,language arts,social studies,foreign language,and various arts like theatre,dance,and visual arts.Those who get two or more of these awards immediately stand out.

Sometimes there are awards for those who improved significantly over the past.If a student is far from being the best,he could pretend to do badly first,then show much improvement the next time.Another interesting award is the outstanding ESL(English as a Second Language)student award,which is given to one ESL student for doing well in learning English.What is funny is that there are rarely more than a handful of ESL students to choose from.

The best things about volleyball are the sense of teamwork and the interaction between players.Students and school teams often play in their gyms.Friends and families set up nets in a park and play ther.Sometimes,even neighborhoods put together their own teams to compete with each other.

Beach volleyball is the best.We often play with strangers near by on the beach,and it is always fun meeting new people.The teams can be all men,all women,or mixed.Usually we take turns,so each group can rest and watch other people play.
