  Down by the Salley Gardens, my love and I did meet.

  She passed the Salley Gardens, with little snow-white feet.

  She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree.

  But I being young and foolish, with her would not agree.

  In a field by the river, my love and I did stand.

  And on my leaning shoulder, She laid her snow-white hand.

  She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs.

  But I was young and foolish, and now I'm full of tears.

  Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, inwrought with golden and silver light.

  The blue and the dim and the dark cloths of night and light and the half-light, I would spreadthe cloths under your feet:

  那些湛蓝、浅灰和深黑色的绣袍,闪烁着夜光、日光和霞光,我愿把它们全都铺在您的足下;

  But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

  I have spread my dreams under your feet;

  Tread softly because you tread upon my dreams.

  Bright star, would I were steadfast as thou art-- not in lone splendour hung aloft the night andwatching, with eternal lids apart. Like nature's patient, sleepless Eremite.

  The moving waters at their priestlike task of pure ablution round earth's human shores.

  Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask Of snow upon the mountains and the moors-- no-yet stillsteadfast, still unchangeable.

  Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast, to feel for ever its soft fall and swell, awake forever in a sweet unrest.

  Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, and so live ever---or else swoon to death
